Programme Structure

Overview of the Course Modules

Delivered through a series of structured modules, combining live teaching, discussion, and practical coaching to support skill development at each stage.

Core Competencies of Coaching

Learners will develop listening and questioning skills, and begin to use tools like GROW and the Wheel. ICF and EMCC competencies are introduced, and we differentiate coaching, mentoring and other interventions.

Understanding the Individual

Values, transference and self-awareness are important for coach and coachee. We also introduce Appreciative Inquiry, the SOAR model, and look at Goal Setting in the context of the individual.

The Psychology of Coaching

Learners will be introduced to schools of thought and common terms in psychology. An emphasis is placed on the more recent work in Positive Psychology, Flow and a Strengths Based approach to coaching.

Coaching & Mentoring in the Workplace

Common coaching and mentoring scenarios are explored in this module, including time and decision making. Team coaching is also introduced, along with the managing of additional stakeholders in the coaching / mentoring relationship.

Coaching Change & Conflict

Tools such as SCARF, TACT and Switching Perspectives are explored in this module. We take a deeper look at emotions, triggers, conflict styles and models for understanding how individuals process change.

Career Coaching & Wellbeing

Life Coaches and Executive Coaches will benefit from tools which focus on career planning and development. We examine wellbeing challenges such as bullying and stress, and introduce supervision and the continuing development of the coach.

Teaching Methodology
The content of this course requires the learner to participate and put the theory into practice. The live virtual class is an interactive experience which includes lecture style delivery of content, group discussion, coaching session breakouts with other learners, and feedback on performance. Your tutor is experienced in delivering this content and will regularly monitor your performance in coaching breakout rooms.
Entry Requirements
There are no academic entry requirements for this course. Learners are expected to have a positive attitude for learning, collaborating with others and self development. A competent level of English will also be required to engage with the live classes, coaching sessions and written assessments.
Assessments

This course is assessed in line with the competencies of the accrediting organisations (ICF and EMCC). Therefore, traditional percentage grading is replaced by a Met/ Not Met assessment on the competencies. Your assessments include

  • Reading – One prescribed coaching book and one journal article
  • Coaching – 13 coaching sessions, including a recorded skills demonstration
  • Writing – Reflective Essay (5000 words)

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the Professional Diploma in Coaching from Kingstown College. This award can be used to satisfy the education requirement for a coaching credential/ accreditation with ICF (Level 2 Path for ACC or PCC Level) or EMCC (Practitioner Level) at 160 training hours.

Course is level 6 on QQI

Do I need prior coaching experience?
No. This diploma is designed as a starting point for those new to coaching, as well as those looking to formalise existing skills with an accredited qualification.
How much time should I expect to commit each week?
On average, learners commit approximately 8–10 hours per week, including live sessions, self-directed study, and coaching practice.
Is the programme delivered fully online?

Yes. The programme is delivered fully online through live, interactive classes via Zoom. You’ll take part in real-time sessions with your tutors and fellow students, allowing you to learn, participate in discussions and complete practical coaching activities from wherever you are.

What accreditation does this diploma carry?
The programme is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and recognised by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). It is also aligned with QQI Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

What happens after I complete the diploma?
Graduates can apply for ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credentials and continue to advanced programmes at Kingstown College, including our MSc in Coaching.
